Newborn Yorkshire Terrier Puppies

Wow, how amazing is this picture of a Newborn Yorkshire Terrier Puppy!
Isn't is amazing to see this puppy mere minutes after birth. This Newborn is only 2 and a half ounces. Yes, that is TWO and a half ounces. Almost as light as a feather you might say. This Yorkshire Terrier Puppy is the third puppy born in this litter of four. Having four Yorkie Puppies born in a litter is a miracle in itself. Most Yorkshire Terrier Dam's have two puppies in a litter, three can even be expected but four..now that is quite a feat. If you look close you can see the umbilical cord in-between the rear legs.
I am going to take you step by step through the birth of a litter of Yorkie Puppies. Please read tomorrows blog posting for continued tales of the birth.

Most female Yorkshire Terriers go into labor anywhere from day 58-63. I really want the mom to me as close to day 63 as possible because if puppies are born four or five days earlier they are usually pre-mature and can pass away as they just are not strong enough to survive. I equate this to a human baby being born three months early. they are not as strong as if they were two months early of one week early.  What I do is try to keep the expectant mom in the kitchen and living room where I can see her and keep her calm. I want to have her be as stress free as possible. This is also where she will sleep in her crib beside my bed so I can see and hear her. Trust me once you have a baby you can hear even the slightest movement or sound the Yorkie mommy makes. I sort-of sleep with one eye and two ears open. Needless to say that since I start doing this five to six days before her expectant due date, I get pretty tired.

Now I can tell you that since I am tired and have not been sleeping well while I wait and watch for signs of labor starting.  What I usually see first is some "nesting". Nesting is digging and trying to make a soft and safe place for the puppies to be born. This is a primal instinct in dogs. As labor progress's the mom might even bite the bedding and try to tear it. This is very common.  Next, panting may or may not begin. Then.... You will have to read more tomorrow on this blog to find out what else can happen.
